Although these practices are legal, they are undoubtedly questionable and consequently problematic to the industry. Any action that injects the slightest bit of uncertainty into an industry – especially one that already begs for transparency and clarity – is a complete disservice to consumers. Patrick Mays, an engineer for an oil and gas company in Houston, recently went shopping for a new electricity plan and found that the best deal available would cost about 55 percent more than what he’s paying, boosting his average rate to 9.5 cents per kilowatt hour from 6.1 cents under his expiring 12-month contract. The power bills for his 2,000-square foot home will climb an average of $30 a month over the year, he said, but he will take the brunt of the rate increase during the hot summer when he estimates his monthly bill will top out at $186, nearly double the $95 he paid last year. Snowpack, streamflows, seasonality, salmon, etc. all affect the amount of water that can flow through a dam at any given time. Forecasting these variables predicts the available potential energy for a dam for a given period.[124] Some regions such as the Egypt, China and the Pacific Northwest get significant generation from hydroelectric dams. In 2015, SAIDI and SAIFI more than doubled from the previous year in Zambia due to low water reserves in their hydroelectric dams caused by insufficient rainfall.[125] +− How Rates Work Copyright 2018 by KPRC Click2Houston - All rights reserved. 3). Offers plans like Free Weekends where you can get free electricity supply for high usage days 2.     Fraud:  Too many people have been victimized by glib sales reps with promises of cheap electricity flowing in an unending stream only to discover that, as is so often true, “it ain’t necessarily so”.  They’ve been locked into unwanted term contracts or there’s a catch – some utilities will give you the great rate only if you meet a usage minimum; basically, the “rate” is, in actuality, a “bulk purchase” discounted fee – or they paid a deposit never to hear from the rep again. Single-Family House Incremental Interruptible Power Rate - Applicable to Rates 3B, 3C and 4B If you can use more than 60% of your electricity off-peak—from 9 p.m. to 10 a.m.—this time-of-use rate may save you money. Mandatory for some customers with average daily uses of 130 kWh or higher during the summer billing season, this rate is optional to all other residential customers. None of this addresses the second big question that Goodall faces, which is – how do we ensure the power is always available, including when it is not being generated? Germany, and Britain, are already sometimes generating more power than they need between May and August. But Goodall’s own figures make it clear that at other times there is a theoretical gap in most northern countries, especially in the winter, when meaningful quantities of solar energy will be generated for only a few hours a day, and not those during which it is most needed (especially for heating). Goodall starts by discussing the different storage options in power generation itself – such as, for example, concentrated solar power that is used to heat salts or other solutions that then continue to generate heat and steam for turbines after dark. Syntheses with wind and biomass generation are also possible, and much may also be achieved through demand management, on which there is an interesting chapter. In the long run, however, the challenge is to replace baseline generation with sufficient grid storage so that solar generation can meet most or all of our needs. Not least of the factors forcing this upon us is (as Goodall acknowledges) that the more of our needs are taken care of by solar power, the less there will be that needs to be covered by (say) gas-fired or nuclear power stations – and the cost of that baseline generation per watt actually needed will skyrocket. So although Goodall does not directly say so, it would seem that, with rising generation from renewables, a migration from baseline generation to grid storage is an economic imperative. You can usually find this information by looking at your electricity bill or by calling your energy provider. If you choose to switch before your contract is up, your current contract may outline an early termination fee. However, according to the Public Utility Commission of Texas, customers can switch providers without paying an early termination fee if they schedule the switch no earlier than 14 days before their current plan expires. When you change providers, you’ll be able to indicate the date you want the switch to occur. Related Video Shorts (0) You are now following this newsletter. See all newsletters.
